Positive: As the photos on Booking.com indicate, the views from the deck at the Wakan Heritage Homes (WHH) are spectacular especially around sunrise and sunset. During our short stay, we had some different and dramatic cloud formations which meant the views were always changing. The rooms are comfortable and the meals were excellent. All the staff are pleasant and helpful. I have some mobility issues and getting from the reception area to our rooms was not easy for me but I was helped by all.

Negative: My complaint is not about WHH but Wakan village as a tourist destination. Yes, the views are stunning and the walks lovely. However, most local residents have moved out of the village to other nearby towns and villages, and so Wakan no longer has the same authenticity of a local lived-in village that it had 10 years ago when we last visited. The village is now mostly inhabited by expat workers - not a problem in itself, except that it doesn't feel like a traditional Omani village anymore. Some parts of the village trail need more care. There is a litter and other trash in the corners of some fields. The gardens did not seem as well tended as in the past (perhaps because we were there in mid-winter). None of this is the fault of WHH, but those with a vested interested in Wakan as a tourist destination will need to care for the village better if they want to tourists to keep coming. There is a difference between a heritage village and run-down one.
